Scrubby zoom stops working

Scrubby Zoom works when I open up documents, then afterworking for a short while it just gives up and stops. When this happens I just get the draw zoom area feature and Illustrator zooms in to this area.

Why does it stop working, and how can it be permantly fixed?

Affinity Designer never has this issue, why can’t Illustrator just consistently work the way it’s meant to?!

Hi Anubhav, I’m using Windows 11 Home 25H2, 26200.8894.

Intel Core i9-14900K, 128GB RAM, RTX4090 GPU.

It happens with all files, I’m afraid that I haven’t got the time to create a screen record as there’s no telling when it’ll do it - but essentially the program will go from being able to use scrubby zoom, to then the same keyboard shortcuts drawing a rectangle of ‘marching ants’ inwhich Illustrator zooms in to.

Which NVidia driver is your computer running, the Game Ready Driver or Studio Driver? Is the computer running the latest version?

Another possible culprit is attached devices like a Wacom tablet or external touch pad. Sometimes simply disconnecting and reconnecting the device’s USB cable can fix some problems. Sometimes rebooting the system works. A bad device driver can cause issues, like scrubby zoom in Illustrator not working. I have a Wacom tablet on my home setup, but I have to keep Windows Ink disabled in the tablet driver properties because it disrupts some very basic pen operations -like pressing down the pen tip and dragging for animated zoom. Other functions get disrupted too, like right click operations. Disabling Windows Ink robs the pen of pressure sensitive functions, but the other issues Windows Ink causes are just intolerable. Occasionally Windows Ink will try to turn itself on again in the tablet driver. I really hate Windows Ink and wish Wacom could find a way to make its tablets work 100% without any involvement from Windows Ink.
