SDK for working with AI files

I have a requirement in my current project to work with AI files. Baring the details, I need to programmatically open an AI file, replace some text and or image content and then export this as a PDF or PS file. I've been doing some research and haven't made much headway. Some one else has had to have solved this problem before and I figured this might be a good place to ask.

Does the SDK offer this kind of functionality?

The CS3 SDK has a plug-in called SnippetRunner, which runs a number of code snippets through a panel in Ai.

There are code snippets for opening files and saving and exporting files to a number of formats, the code for which can be found on the CS3 SDK - <SDK>/samplecode/codesnippets/
