Select Zoom Feature

This feature is not good.  I want to be able to zoom out from where I am on the screen, not from what is selected... Sorry I know a lot goes into software development, but what the heck were y'all thinking?  I've read that I could just hold alt and move the mouse wheel, but I don't want to have to move hand off the keyboard to get to the mouse...

This completely disrupts my workflow....@
