selected object changes to selected point when I try to drag

Hi, I have a problem that occurs about half the time that drives me crazy. I often have a need to drag an object (that is nested within a layer containing other objects.) I select the object with the Group Selection tool in order to drag it as shown here: https://imgur.com/a/OJIsZsu . Many times when I drag, the selection changes to selecting only a point and therefore drags only a point, shown here: https://imgur.com/a/sPGQO97 , which is NOT what I want. What I want is to drag the entire object, as shown here: https://imgur.com/a/uQix2KG . I can not identify why in some instances I'm able to drag the entire object, and in others, I'm not. This is frustrating and time-wasting; can anyone tell me what's going on?  Note: I don't have this problem if I am trying to move something on a layer; I have it when I am trying to move something on a sub-layer. (I work with a Microsoft Surface tablet and stylus, fyi.) Thanks in advance for any help, Erica

Hi, Erica,

It appears that in the preferences under Selection and Anchor Display you have selected "Show handles when multiple anchors are selected." Your screenshot shows that you have dragged, not an anchor point, but a handle. If you happen to click on a handle with the Group Selection tool, dragging it will give the result you show. If you click on the path or an anchor point you will be able to move the entire path. Or deselect the handle behavior in the preferences.

Amazing. This has plagued me forever, and it appears it's just that simple. I changed my selection preferences as suggested. Thank you so very much. 🙂 🙂
