selecting anchor points

why am I having so much trouble selecting anchor points. I never had problems in much older versions of Illustyrator. 

I increased the tolerance in the preferences and enlarged the anchor point size. That doesn't make any difference. I don't understand, I hover the curser/selection tool over the anchor point, in the middle of, next to, all around and one out of five times I actually select it. What is different??? Is it because I'm old? I can see what I'm doing, it's no different than the three decades I've been using Illustrator. 

It drives me nuts.
