Selecting Tins in Illustrator a pain - it never works well

Someone else must be experiencing this.

If I have a shape, make it a color, then go to Tint, select a tint, it doesn't change immediately. Sometimes after clicking 20 times all over the place it will decide to change. Completely unpredictable. Has been happening for a year easily. Super annoying.

Anyone else seeing this? See the screenshots. You see that I have selected a tint but the battery shape doesn't take the color.
