Selections not moving using shift or option keys

Updated to Adobe 2022 (V 26.4.1) and am incredibly frustrated – whenever I try to move a selection using shift or option key or both, it won't go anywhere and makes a "dink" sound like it's stuck. Nothing is locked. What's this about? Never experienced this in at least 20 years of use.

Hi @Susana238071694nq2 @saxtonstudio,

We are sorry for the trouble. This is a known issue with Magic Mouse on Mac devices while working on Ai v26.4.1.

The product team is aware of this & they have identified the issue and currently working on a fix. I would request you to upvote this UserVoice for updates. I would request to please be patient and stay tuned for the updates.

In the meantime, as a workaround, you may install the older version of Ai v26.3.1.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

Hello @saxtonstudio,

Sorry to hear about this experience. I would request you try resetting Illustrator's preferences as suggested by Bill and Met1 by following the steps shared in this article (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/troubleshoot-preference-issues.html) and sharing your observations.
Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with the defaults. You may take a backup of these settings from the location mentioned in the article.

Also, kindly try running Illustrator under the root user account (macOS) or a different administrator account (Windows) and check if it helps.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
Anubhav

I've been having the same problem with the latest update. It also happened a few updates ago and it didn't stop until the next update came out. And from what I read before this is a problem that has come up for years.

I just tried the solution suggested, but it didn't fix it. It seemed to be working at first, so I had hope, but it just started beeping and not letting me move the selections again. It's random, sometimes it lets me move an object, sometimes it doesn't. It really is interrupting my flow, not to mention affecting the time it takes me to get things done. Very frustrating. I'm not interested in being a beta tester when I'm paying a full fee for this software.

When you updated your Illustrator did you use the option to import previous settings and preferences? If so then that may be the source of the erratic behavior you're talking about. Try resetting preferences and see if returning the program to its defaults solves the issue.

To do so:

For Macintosh Users: The User Library folder in which Illustrator’s preferences are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that Illustrator is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N).With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the folder called “Adobe Illustrator <Version #> Settings” (earlier versions of Illustrator might just say “Adobe Illustrator”) and the file called “com.adobe.Illustrator.plist” and delete both that folder and that file. When Illustrator is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

For Windows Users: You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching Illustrator and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

To do so: On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version number]\ Settings\<Language>. Make sure that Illustrator is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

Oh boy that's a lot of imfo! I didn't do anything when Adobe upgraded... it's done automatically with my Adobe Creative Suite account. Do you think I still need to go through the steps above? It seems odd to have to do all that for a standard update. (Also, I'm on a Mac.)

Yes. Doing an install without trashing old preferences is just asking for trouble. It may seem like a lot of work now but it usually pays off to start with fresh preferences after an install.
