Setting separate drawing scales for two files open at the same time

I am drawing house plans for a remodel. To get them precise I’m preparing drawing elements at 1:1 scale - which I set in the Dimension settings tool. I want a separate file at a scale of 1:48 for printing at 24”x36” open at the same time to paste various drawing element into for final preparation and formatting. AI responses online say that when I open the Dimension settings in one document those settings are for that document only and that I can set the other one at a different scale. I’ve done that several times and it does not work. Either I’m missing some setting to limit the choice to a single file or those instructions are simply wrong.

Anyone have any experience with this and suggestions?

Thanks!

You can’t. The Dimension Tool setting is application wide not specific to a document.
Be also aware that there is a bug when copy/paste dimension group object they will be expanded and will loose there “dynamic” properties.

I imagine that’s possible, hadn’t thought about it but might give it a shot. Generally, what I’ve done is to create various drawings in a working file at 1:1 then copy and paste what I need to a new file, set the scale to 1:48 in the Dimension tool settings, then select and transform the artwork to 2.083% to finalize the drawing in the neatline and title block. It’s more cumbersome than working in architectural software, but the cost for the ‘real’ stuff is beyond what I’m willing to pay.

Thanks for the idea. All the best...

perhaps you could open two illustrator versions ie 2025 and 2026 to setup separate dimension scales and be able to work on the those files at the same time?

Perhaps I’m just old-school, but an accurately populated and maintained database with a well-designed user interface that’s undergone rigorous user testing is good enough for me. AI should be relegated to cute little games for children...

Thanks, that’s what I thought. The AI response I kinda found dubious, was. I appreciate your confirmation and will find a different workaround.
