shape tool drawing several layers at once

I am trying to use my shape tool and it keeps drawing several layers at once. How can I stop it from doing this? I'm just wanting a single oval and when I try using it it's making so many layers at once. I am not sure how this is happening. Can anyone tell me what could fix this problem?? Thanks in advance.
