Shape tool not showing cross

When using the shape tool I keep getting what looks like the Direct Selection tool instead of the cross that I used to get. Need to know how to switch it back if possible. Thanks

Then this would be the first thing I'd try. If it doesn't help, reset the preferences (which will erase your settings).
