shapes not assuming selected properties in appearance panel

Using version 25.2.3. I am a raw beginner & teacher with 6 students on PC's. Starting intro unit and 4 of the 6 students draw an arc and a rectangle with no issues.  Two can not fill in the rectangle or change the stroke on the arc. Reset essentials workspace, verified on correct layer, changes are shown in panel but shapes do not change.
