Shapes tool disappeared from tools

I have Illustrator 10 and when I first installed it I had a shapes button. Now it is gone. I've looked through the comments and others said that the shape that is selected shows instead of the rectangle but I don't have any shapes. How do I get it back?

Illustrator 10 being a very old version (end of life), so I am not sure if same workflow would work for it, but you may try resetting the preferences.

Are you sure you're thinking of Illustrator and not Photoshop?
