shift/option drag to select multiple bullets

So in previous iterations of Illustrator holding shift/option and dragging on the layers in the panel would select multiple bullets.  This option is gone in the last few versions and there doesn't seem to be a reasonable replacement option. I know you can select similar strokes, or group in new layer and then deselect, but these aren't functional in some instances. Suppose I'm doing an representational drawing of a dog with hundreds of similar strokes representing hair, but I want to select the last 40 strokes (excepting a few)  and change the colour or weight.  Suppose I can't use the lasso without selecting strokes I don't want to use in my selection. Currently I have to click on all the bullets of the strokes I want. Tedious.  Time-wasting.  Is there some replacement function I'm missing?  Why can't we just have shift/option drag back?  Did nobody else use this function?

Yes, they all pertain to my question somewhat. Thank you.  Hopefully someone will listen!
