Spacebar activates "Enable" window popup with new file

More often than not, when I open a new file and use the spacebar to navigate or to zoom, a window is immediately opened that has the prompt “enable”. I do not have any linked files, or anything that the document would be looking for, closing this window allows me to work normally but it is annoying!

@defaultlyi4j81giatz What function does that shortcut do? I believe cmd+space defaults (for me) to the zoom tool in Illustrator. Opt+Cmd+Space defaults to Finder Search on Mac.

If you’ve made custom keyboard shortcuts with the spacebar, that might be something you want to double check, you could have conflicting ones that are causing the file screen to open somehow. There seems to be overlap between Illustrator shortcuts and MacOS ones.

I have a more correct answer: when Illustrator is opened, the “Add Reference” box on the homescreen’s Generate Vectors screen is auto-highlighted. If I open Illustrator and press space, I am met with the Add Reference file dialogue which is what OP is describing as the “Enable” window.

This also happens if you open an Illustrator file with the app closed and press spacebar. I’m able to recreate this 100% of the time somehow now that I know what’s causing it. If it doesn’t happen, that means the “Add Reference” button somehow became unhighlighted.

This is a new issue with the latest update.
Am an instructor and thus am opening many files all of the time.
Typically I open a file, press Spacebar for the Hand tool.
Now what happens is this Open File dialogue box appears. I close that and it works fine up until I open a new file and then Spacebar opens the Open File dialogue box.
Time after time. This is on my PC laptop at home along with Mac and PC lab computers. Different labs, even on different campuses. Same problem, definitely Adobe and not the users or any key binding.

This is entirely an Adobe issue and likely will only be solved at the next update if they acknowledge it is occurring.

Same issue here. Today I tried removing all the Wacom preferences and Wacom software from my Mac. I've opened a few files in Illustrator since then and haven't seen the pop-up window yet, so it may be related to the Wacom driver. I'll keep testing and report back if it comes back.

Update: removing the Wacom software didn't fix it. The pop-up has come back, so that wasn't the cause. It's really disruptive — I can't use the spacebar to pan or zoom without the "Enable" window interrupting me. Hoping someone from Adobe can look into this.

Glad I’m not the only one! 🤣 I too use a wacom, but it’s not on all the time, usually only when I use photoshop, not illustrator so I don’t believe that would effect my either. Can’t seem to pin it down, sometimes it just doesn’t pop up.

It very much looks like the Open Dialogue box, but it will only allow the file types shown in the “enable” menu. It doesn’t specify that it is looking for a particular file, I can select a jpeg or png to “enable”, but nothing happens. The window just closes. And yes, I will open a file, or even have an existing file open, hit the spacebar by itself or in combo with Command to zoom and that dialogue box pops up. Bizarre.

Weird, I was able to get the same menu with my first spacebar click but can’t seem to get it again. I’ve never seen that menu.

Are you able to navigate to a valid file and open it? If so, what happens? Did you have any panels open or objects selected when you hit spacebar, or any third party apps open like a browser or microsoft/etc?

The spacebar keyboard shortcut should only enable the hand tool AFAIK, I would start by saving your preferences and resetting them to see if it still happens with default settings.

Also make sure Full Keyboard Access is turned off in Mac Settings: Accessibility → Keyboard

I am still unable to recreate it again, not sure how it happened the first time. I see your other comment that you hit command + spacebar; does that not bring up your Spotlight Search on Mac?
