Question

Spooky! Objects have moved between layers, on their own! Help Please!

I have a client who requires .ai floorplans to be laid out on specific named layers: walls, doors, furniture etc.

All of the plans were drawn in illustrator, to his standard, by my artworker, and then linked into an indesign file by my designer.

The project is now complete and the working files, assets etc. sent to my client.

It seems that at some point all of the content from 7 of the layers has moved into a single, upper layer and has been "grouped", leaving 7 empty layers.

How did this happen and how can I restore the information to the correct layers without using  "undo"?

Can you not consult your artworker? It's not possible to know how this happened after the fact unless you can undo, although my best guess is 'accidentally'.

Thank you, I have consulted both artworker and designer and neither is putting their hands up. It's not a huge job to put it back, but I have a much bigger job coming up and I don't want this to happen again, nor do I want to do the unpicking of layers manually and have it go wrong again.

I can't "undo" because I don't know when the error occurred and I may lose plan amends

»and has been "grouped"«

Grouping will create one Group which naturally resides on one Layer.

That this happened »on its own« without (accidental) user input doesn’t seem particularly likely.

You could copy the whole stuff to a new document, then undo in the original and, if you succeed in locating a state where the Layering was as intended, check the objects against the copy.
