Stars going crazy

Whenever I recolor or expand this logo, the stars go crazy and I can't figure out why. They are supposed to look like the version on the left obviously.

I created a new window and copied it over to that- no issues. So I guess that file was just glitching? Idk, thanks for both of your responses!

Your copyting over successfully seems to indicate a corrupt document, as you guessed.

Apart from that, the stars seemed to turn into broom stars.

Do you know how the stars were originally made? Are they part of some kind of art brush, scatter brush or some other live effect? I've never seen a standard path with a plain line stroke go wonky like that when expanded.
