stroke unaffected after distort effects

The fist image is the one I'm trying to copy. The stroke in this example is affected by the distort while mine is unchanged. What am I missing here?

    There is no need to "Expand" the stroke. Just assign Effect>Path>Outline Stroke to the artwork. This will make the distortion work without losing editability.

      Nevermind, I found out I needed 'expand' for this to work.

      Probably because the stroke is not a stroke anymore, but outlined.
