Swatch panel gone rogue, please help

Up until yesterday my swatches panel was fine. Then suddenly all the default swatches disappeared except for the two pre-made pattern swatches. I have tried adding them back by going to Library-->default swatches-->Print--> selecting all the swatches and dragging into the Swatches Panel. Nothing happens. They do not populate over the the swatches panel. ALSO, I cannot create a new swatch group and add to the swatches panel. I select all the colors, then click on New Swatch Group, give the group a name, hit OK. No swatches are adding into the Swatch Panel. Even several of the options on the panel are greyed out including the trash can icon and the Swatches Options. I've tried resetting my workspace, etc. Something is terribly amiss and I can't fix it. Any suggestions?
