Hello everyone, I'm a beginner on illustrator.

Here is my promble, I just finished designing a 73-page catalog on illustrator, so I would like to save it as a PDF for printing.

My problem is that when I compress the PDF file to a size less than 15Mb, I see that my images lose their quality, so I want to know how to have a compressed PDF file (small size) but with a good quality of my images.

Thank you in advance.

Merci d'avance

Save as a PDF from Illustrator using the default settings (do not downsample).

Open your PDF in Acrobat and save-as an optimized PDF, where you can downsample the images and reduce the size. 300 dpi is usually a good target, but check with your printer. There are many ways to send a large PDF, so don't downsample more than you need to. You can check the effective resolution of an image using the Acrobat Tool- Output Preview and selecting Object Inspector as the item to preview. Don't forget to include bleed, if needed.

    I second everyone's suggestions.

My general advice would be to next time use InDesign for a document of this size. Illustrator is really not meant for long documents like a 73-page catalog. Will it be printed? If so you will need to make the page count a multiple of 4 or 8.

Good luck, hope it works out.

    Bonjour friend,

    I hope all is well.

Illustrator is tricky with its exports to PDF settings sometimes.

    My suggestions would be:

    - Make sure that the images you are using are high-quality / high resolution (150 or 300DPI)

    - When saving as PDF trying this:

FILE > Save a copy > Name file, choose correct format "Adobe PDF" > Adobe PDF presets: [PDF/X-1a2001]

If the PDF file ends up being huge, that is understandable. The file should be especially at 73 pages. Once you save your PDF open it and view it at 100% scale, then zoom in 150%, 300%, and check the quality of your photos. You can also print two pages out and look at the quality of your photos.

Most importantly, the images that you're using need to be high resolution. I hope this helps!

Thank you very much, my friend,
but how do you know an image is worth 150 or 300 DPI?

If you can take the image and open it in Photoshop.

Go to the top menu Image > Image size > DPI and check to see if it is 150 or 300, (within that range)

If it isn't and you're working with low resolution photos, you may need your client to send you higher quality photos because they should have sent high resolution photos in the first place. Let me know if this helps!
