Text and sometimes images appearing at an angle

Hi, since downloading the new version of Illustrator on my new macbook, i'm suddenly having trouble with illustrator. For some reason, text and shape is always being created at an angle. Text created at an angle reads as no angle in the properties menu - ie. i need to adjust it to -1 degree in order for it to be straight. Shapes also are drawn at an angle, but at least the properties window says as much. Any idea what is causing this abnd how to remedy it?
