Question

Text from previous save duplicates when opening Illustrator file in Photoshop

A bug that occurs far too frequently is that I'll save an Illustrator file, then export it to Photoshop to flatten it for proofing and printing smaller files. But let's say I get a change request, I'll make the change, re-save the Illustrator file, and open it again in Photoshop. However, this new file is now showing the text in the new spot and the old spot.

I thought this could be a Photoshop issue, but the only way to fix it is to open the illustrator file, seelct all, copy, create new file, paste, and re-save.

That error sounds pretty strange. I don't know why Photoshop would open an Illustrator file showing a text object in one spot and another copy of it in a different spot unless previous edits in the Illustrator file are being kept on other layers or something.

I'll often move artwork from Illustrator into Photoshop using the clipboard since that approach has a few different options, such as pasting vector paths rather than a flattened pixel-based image.

I haven't been able to resolve the issue yet. It happens on all files in which I open an Illustrator file with Photoshop, realize I have to correct something, go back into Illustrator to make the correction, re-save Illustrator file, and re-open Illustrator file in Photoshop. That's when the double text appears - one in the new location and one still in the old location. This doesn't happen on images or even vectors. Just text. I'm using Photoshop v 27.2.0 and Illustrator v 30.1.

To correct the issue, I have to select all, copy, create new document (to size), paste, re-save. I even still use the same file name. When I open the Illustrator in Photoshop again, the issue is gone.

You could try and disable Save in background in the Illustrator peferences.

Then save. Does it still happen?
