Text illustrator

I was wondering about only one thing.

How can you make the effect on the Blackriver word to make it follow the line of the background because

usually i create a path and type on it, but this final result seem better and i see no text path on the .ai file

i would use guidelines, the font as a starting point and lots and lots of manual adjustment.
