I have the same issue as well. I never tried to save PDF and closed my ai file after saving my work but the next time I try to open it, I get this same msg of "This is an Adobe Illustrator file that was saved without PDF content". All the solutions on the communities/boards are talking about exporting the PDF in the correct way but not about recovering the ai file with the data. The file size still is the same as if it was with the data in it, so I guess the work exists somewhere in the file, but needs to be recovered. Any helpers?

Hello @din-ash1,

Would you mind providing some details about the circumstances under which these files were saved or edited and the location of the files where they were stored? For example, were there any unexpected Illustrator crashes, sudden app closures, system shutdowns, or power cuts during the editing process?

Also, kindly share a link to a sample file after uploading it to Dropbox/Google Drive/etc. so I can check it on my end. Although I cannot guarantee a successful recovery, I will try my best to do so.

Hello Anubhav,

Thanks for the response. The file under discussion was worked on, edited, and saved under general circumstances along with 4 other files of the same nature. All the other files are fine, but this one seems to be facing this error. There weren't any crashes or power cuts as such. It is saved in the D drive. This is the link to the file - https://drive.google.com/file/d/14bG2avel4mLelklHtwRoKP7rVaFfdXp1/view?usp=sharing

Although you haven't promised anything, I hope you salvage the file and save me hours of time and resources. Thanks in advance.

The file probably went bust.

You could use your backup file.

If you do not have a backup, then the best moment to come up with a backup strategy would be now. You always need to save different version of your files, because when something goes wrong while saving, then even having saved the file every 5 minutes would have been useless.

Also: you might want to turn off the option "Save in background" in the Illustrator preferences and always save files on your internal harddisk.
