tools and controls disappear upon reopening illustrator

Dear forum, any idea why all controls and tools are gone every time I open Illustrator ( and indesign ) and have to be re-opened and arranged in the side panel windows again? - it seems like the software cannot remember how I arranged my tools from the previous session/works.

help is much appreciated 🙂

Could be your preferences file. They can go corrupt. You could try: https://helpx.adobe.com/de/illustrator/kb/troubleshoot-preference-issues.html

If you reset the preferences, all your settings will be gone. You can preserve your preferences by renaming the preferences folder when Illustrator has been closed.

It sounds like Illustrator and InDesign are not saving your workspace preferences. Try resetting your preferences by holding Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Cmd+Option+Shift (Mac) while launching the program. You can also manually save your workspace layout by going to Window > Workspace > New Workspace to ensure it loads the correct setup each time.

And check if the apps have writing permissions.
