Tools are not clickable?

Cant seem to click on any tools in the tool bar in Illustrator. The very latest version. Latest Mac OS. No idea whats happened. Been working perfectly. Ive re downloaded it. Still the same. Got rid of the prefs, but still no luck. Tried different mouse and also wacoms but still the same. Can select with shortcuts, and can also hover over the tool and it goes dark but cant click. Sometimes if i click, ALL the panels disapear apart from the main image. Any suggestions?
