Tools Greyed Out In Illustrator

I am attempting to create a logo for my company in Illustrator.

The logo will be circular text with a design in the middle.

I created a NEW document and went to select the Elipse Tool.

The tool and many others are greyed out and not selectable.

Can someone explain if I have missed a step? I'm a little lost
