Tranform Panel not constraining proportions correctly.

I'm having this VERY STRANGE problem - the transform menu in the top panel bar - when I use the arrows to enlarge an object - with the constrain chain checked (ON) the both adjust, but there's an ever so slightly difference. That is the proportional scaling ISN"T exactly on. For example, if I have a box that is 5.5x4.25 and I WANT scale it up proportionally to 5.75x4.5, which is constrained, it scales up to 5.75x4.4332. That 4.4332 is SUPPOSED to be, constrained to 4.5.


Any idea what the hell is going on here and why it's not functioning properly?

If you have a rectangle of size width x height

5.5" x 4.25"

with the chain enabled if you change the width to 5.75" (whether by cursor keys or manually entering the value) your result will be

5.75" x 4.432"

5.75/ 5.5 = 1.0455 = 104.55%

4.25 x 1.0455 = 4.434 (the rounding is why  4.432 & 4.434 do not exactly match)

If I am understanding you post correctly you believe proportionately is adding .25" to both dimensions, and that is not how proportionately works.

that is constrained. if both sides are different dimensions to start with, they wouldn't both increase by 0.25, would they?

5.5 to 5.75 and 4.25 to 4.5 are increases of 4.5 and 5.8 percent respectively.

Are you perhaps scaling to preview bounds? And is scale strokes and effects turned on?

Apart from that there might always be rounding errors. Especially when you work in other units than pixels/inches.
