Transparency and image/shape/object outline issue

Illustrator has been playing up and recently it has been failing to load shapes and images from template files i have been using for over a year. It is also adding background to shapes when im moving the shape but then dissapears when it stops moving. It's also messing up when adjusting the transparency of a shape or object. This has only happened in the last few days. I have tried uninstalling illustrator and then re-installing it as well as resetting my preferences but no changes. Any idea what might be going on.
