Transparency disapears when grouped

Hi there,

Here is my problem.

I have an image I created using adobe draw. When I bring it into AI on my desktop and then try to either group the whole image or copy/paste it into a new template the transparency gets wonky and lost. It's as though it forget's that it's suppose to be a *multiply* layer.

I can go back and select all the individual marks and go to multiply to then get them back to the opacity/transparency I want, but that takes forever.

any help would be appreciated.

original image

going to group all the layers

whoa, suddenly everything that was *multiplied* is bleh

You need to move the blending modes form the layer to the objects. I recommend groups the items on a layer, and then you can assign the blending mode to that.

You layer with items highlighted in magenta have a blending mode at the layer level, you can see this if you click on the radio button and watch your appearance palette.

You can option click on a layers visibility eyeball to solo that layer and then group

then add the blending mode to the group

after doing this to each layer with a blending mode you can then  group

Then items will then move to the top layer, and use the blending g mode you have there, which you shod change to normal if that is not the case.

The appearance palette is a valuable tool in Illustrator and very worthwhile to use on often.

In Adobe Draw you can only apply multiply to the layer.

But when grouping stuff in Illustrator you move it from its original layer to a different layer which does not multiply.

So you get what you see.

You will need to select all the objects on the layer first and apply the multiply to the objects instead of the layer. Then group all your stuff.

Or don't group at all.

Hi Monika, thanks for your reply.

I kind of get it but this is what just happened...

I went into my ai file and selected the entire layer that I had multiplied via adobe draw.

Selected it.

Went to Transparency>multiply (you can see in the transparency window it shows it as multiplied)

Then grouped the image as a whole

and it is still making the image weird looking.

Not grouping isn't an option because I often take an image from one artboard to another and this problem continues to happen even if I just copy and paste the artwork to a new artboard.

any other ideas?
