Transparent Background

I hand-painted a word and scanned it in but I want the background behind the word to be transparent.

The steps I have seen so far haven't quite worked for my project. I liked the color range trick I tried I think in photoshop, so far it has been the closest I have gotten to a proper trace around the words but I couldn't get from that step to a transparent background. I tried Object> image trace> make in Illustrator but it resulted in badly drawn black and white lines. Maybe I missed a step or didn't know the follow up steps that I would need to do after that to get the color back?

Help me, please, this is driving me crazy!

Black and white is the default, but there are other options.

I don't know which version of Illustrator you are using, so I will just say that after you image trace and get black and white, choose Window > Image Trace to open the Image Trace panel.

With the traced object selected, you can choose Mode: Color, and select up to 30 colors.

If your background is white, you'll probably want to expand Advanced and put a check mark on Ignore White.

When everything looks ok, click Expand to create vector shapes from the traced object. The shapes will be grouped, but you can Object > Ungroup if you like.
