Trim path with shape and retain as separate paths

Hi.

I don't know how to word this well. I'm inexperienced with illustrator.

I have two paths i want to combine and retain some pieces of. when using the pathfinder in this way, i get half of what i want. i want to retain this one intersection line. how should i do this?

Try the Outline Pathfinder. But maybe you'd want to look at the shapebuilder tool. Select both objects, hold down alt and then with the shapebuilder tool click on the part of the path you want to get rid of.
