Question

Trouble exporting each artboard as an AI file

Hey all, I’ve tried doing a search to see if I can figure this out, but it seems to me something has changed in the last few years and nothing suggested is an option anymore.

I have an illustrator file with several things in it, but I would like to be able to save a copy with only what is on the artboard. I have seen this done before, and people in the past seem to have been able to do it, but i’ve tried everything I can find and can’t seem to manage it.

I have tried saving a copy, exporting for screens (does work but can’t be opened by anyone else, comes up with an error page when someone tries to open), save as > export artboards, just about everything out there. The only other workaround I can think of is to make a copy of the file and just delete everything else several times over for all the different things I want a copy of, but that seems more tedious then it needs to be and I would like to see if I can do something better in future as well.

Thanks!

@AtlasC Saving and opening files directly on a network drive or in a cloud connected folder can corrupt files. Saving the file local and after saving copying the file to such a folder is a way to prevent this. The fileformat version 2020 is the latest version.

It’s not saved to the cloud, it’s a local drive. Files were sent together in a zip folder.

If the file cannot be opened, it may have become corrupted while saving.

Did you try Save As and in the options check:”Save Each Artboard to a Separate File” ?

Or do you want to see the content clipped to the artboard?

I did try that yes, I can’t seem to even find that option. I do also only have 1 artboard if that makes a difference

@AtlasC Yes, a single artboard does not show that option (it will be greyed out).

But Export > Export for Screens > AI does remove elements outside the artboard.

It does not hide elements that are partially outside the artboard, you need a clipping mask at the size of the artboard to hide them.
