Trouble making ordinary color swatches

Hi,

Suddenly I'm not able to create color swatches without them becoming patterns. I create a swatch and give it a color, and when I drag it into the swatches panel there is a little white border at the top and bottom of the swatch, and when selected says "New color swatch with pattern 16" (etc). Help!

When you drag an object to the swatches panel, you create a pattern swatch.

Use the + button to create a new color swatch.
