Trouble selecting type

Anyone else having trouble selecting, moving, and editing type. I used to be able to select anywhere within the typebox to move type or edit it. Now I have to select the thin line under the text to select it. It's very frustrating and often missing the line completely and creates a new text box.

 

Is this something I can fix on my end or is this an issue with the Illustrator update?

In  the Illustratpr Preferences > Type there is an option to select type by path. Is that turned on? If so, turn it off.
