I have created an outline of the glasses. Now, I want to add color. But I only want the eye glass frames to be filled with color. I want the fill to end where the frames end. I don't know how to prevent this from happening. I tried outlining the inside of the frames close to the eye lens pieces as shown by the orange paths and I attempted to join these paths but it cant be done as the program tells me I'm using the wrong kind of paths. How do I fill the frame with color without it covering the eyes? I am just a beginner at illustrator so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use the Shape Builder tool

With the glasses selected, click on the frame and  then each lens , which should make them separate objects.
