trying to recreate a text effect in Illustrator 2023

I'm trying to recreate the look of the text in this sample. Primarily the inner shadows. I'm not quite sure how to go about it... if I need to create outlines for my new text to start. I'd appreciate if someone could help or point me towards a tutorial that can show me how.

That's probably a custom application of gradients.

(make a duplicate or do a save as), outline, and then isolate the individual parts of each letter, apply gradients as needed, then change stacking order.

Can you please show the shape you want to apply this to?

Basically you would need to create shapes and then apply gradients to them. This might or might not work with a clipping mask to trim the shadows to match the shape.
