Type tool inserts a symbol (#) in the text box when I use it.

When I use the Type tool in Illustrator it inserts a # at the end of my text, It's not in the text box but seems to be attached. How do I remove it? Also, how do I insert a Trademark symbol into my document so I can see it? Every time I insert one, I can't see it even if I bring it to the front in the layers panel. I'm new to Illustrator but have been using PS regularly for 15+ years and its easy compared to Illustrator - it looks the same but doesn't act the same! I'm on a Mac.

Thanks!

The hash symbol is the 'end of story' symbol; you are seeing it because presumably you have hidden characters on. Go to Type > Hide Hidden Characters to turn them off.

For a ™, either open the Glyphs panel and insert from there, or hold alt and press 0153 on the keypad (in Windows; I don't remember the shortcut for Mac).

Those are invisible characters. You can hide them via the Type menu.

Very helpful when working with tabulators.
