Question

Type tool - textbox bug. Last type key double keystrokes, missing text

When I enter text into a text box I encounter a bug after resizing the box in which the text character is not seen after typing the key-stroke. Then if I type any other keystroke, the previously typed character appears.

Example:

Type C, nothing appears

Type C again; two Cs appear: CC

Type any other key, C appears and the entered character doesn't appear: C

I've experienced this on both CS3 on Windows and CS6 on Mac.

I'm not sure but it seems to only occur after changing from Myriad Pro to Arial. Also I've noticed that the text in the box doesn't justify despite being set under the justification setting.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Restarting the application and the computer doesn't help. Copying the text into a plain text editor doesn't resolve the issue either.

Can't say have seen this more than only a few times sen AI 88, but  in the past

    • Not realizing your keyboard is  set to another language
    • Corrupt font
    • The smart punctuation/ligature feature - similar but this instead  would take 2 characters and  turn them into one

I believe you are  saying that if you copy your text into text editor the "C'  does not show up, but if you go back into Illustrator and set one C, that 2 of them show up. In that case sounds like the input of the characters is actually being interrupted by something. Do you have any system or Illustrator plugins, such as clipboard enhancers, or virus protection? Does this always happen with the same letter (s).

You may want to flush the cookies in your browser as there are some trackers out there tracking keystrokes. Command Comma, in most browser will get you there (manage website data in Safari).

Thank you for the reply. I don't think this is related to Safari, as I've experienced this on Windows with CS3 as well.

The problem occurs with any key. I was just using C as the example I experienced today, but I could reproduce it with any key I tried.

If I restart Illustrator and make a new text box and do not change the default font from Myriad Pro the issue is resolved until I change to Arial or change the size of the text box or make it justified. This makes me think it's not related to a keyboard issue as it is intermittent and application dependent.

The corrupted fonts idea is interesting. Is there a way to refresh the fonts database?

"I believe you are  saying that if you copy your text into text editor the "C'  does not show up, but if you go back into Illustrator and set one C, that 2 of them show up."

Actually if I copy text into the editor the C does show up, I just get two of them at that point.

I'm surprised I'm able to get this behavior on two separate OS's and different versions of Illustrator. My CS6 is obtained through an institutional subscription I believe so I'll see if I'm able to receive support.

My current work-around is to perform all my text writing in another app and then pasting into the text box. As long as I don't enter any new characters it seems to be ok.
