Question

Typefaces are being reset after editing an AI file via the indesign edit original command

When editing a placed ai file and re saving, the typeface and type size are being reset to default after saving and indesign updating the preview. When re opening the ai file again it is also now showing the default view.

Process.

  1. alt + click the file i want to edit from indesign,
  2. Made the changes to the artwork
  3. Resaved and closed the ai file
  4. Indesign updates the preview but changes a random piece of type to default (myriad 12pt) other areas of the artwork that have the same live font do not get effected.
  5. re open the artwork and change it back to what it should be and then it updates properly.

Randomly happening, other files placed in the indesign document using the same typeface can be edited and display fine.

Seriously annoying. I’ve used this typeface for years and had no issues. Placing a PDF works fine but I shouldn’t need to be doing this.

@samb56513748 are you on the latest Illustrator and InDesign versions? Also are you using the regular OpenType version of the font or the variable font version?

    Hi @samb56513748,

Sorry you're running into this, especially since the behavior is intermittent. Along with confirming your Illustrator/InDesign versions, OS, and the exact affected font, could you please enable Highlight Substituted Fonts under Illustrator > Preferences > Type?

Then open the affected AI file directly in Illustrator, go to Type > Find/Replace Font, and check whether the affected font is reported as missing or substituted. Please also confirm whether it's an Adobe Font, locally installed font, or managed through a third-party font manager. Make a small edit, save and reopen the AI file, and check whether the text changes to Myriad again. I'd also recommend resetting the font cache using the steps here: https://adobe.ly/3U8z0mD

Finally, repeat the same workflow using InDesign > Edit Original and let us know the results. This comparison will help us determine whether the font change originates in Illustrator itself or specifically through the InDesign Edit Original workflow.

    Thanks,
    Abhishek
