Unable to colour my character

I want to colour my character, i tried expand appearance, and merge but doesnt work. i really need help.

Can you please select your charachter, and show us a screenshot of that and your appearance panel.

You may have set a fill color at the layer level that is overriding all. Try copying and pasting into a new document, and let us know what happens.
