Unable to edit object in Illustrator on Mac

Hello.

I am unable to edit an object in Illustrator, and I do not know why this is. I have previously exported it as a .png, but there is still this .ai version, which I want to edit. Can anyone help with this problem? I have attached 2 screen shots, one of the image when it opens, and one when I double click on it.

The layers panel shows Image. Do you have another vector version?

Thanks for your response. - Yes, I have a vector version which is similar.
I think I must have accidentally turned it into a non-vector image.
