That is pretty much it... when I have an active shape or line, I can not change the color by clicking on a color in the Swatch panel. Pretty irritating.

In the normal course of work, restarting the computer once or twice (thunderstorms overhead), and restarting Illustrator, the problem seems to be corrected. I never reset the preferences as suggested. I am sure that was good advice, but the problem took care of itself before I had to resort to that. It is working in both the original file I noticed it in, and in new files today. Thanks all. C

    Hi there,

I would like to know if the steps suggested above worked for you, or the issue still persists.

Kindly update the discussion if you need further assistance with it.

    Thanks,

Kurt, I have been doing a lot of work in a single file, which is on draft 6 now. It has not been a problem until today. It is for simple shapes, either fill or stroke. Hopefully later it will reset itself when Illustrator is restarted. Right now I am just selecting and adjusting color from existing shapes nearby.

If you have an object selected and you cannot change it's fill or stroke (check which one is targeted), try to reset your Preferences.

Does that happen in all files? Or just in specific files?

Are you talking about plain shapes like filled or stroked rectangles, circles etc.?

The Layers palette or the Appearance palette does not inform you that there might be additional appearances applied?
