Undo --> Redo Error Causes Mixed History States (over a year now)

Not sure how widespread this issue is, but I’ve been experiencing it for over a year since an update.

Example: I have a group with many path layers. I move the group using the Selection Tool, then hit Cmd+Z to undo. Some paths move back, but others don’t. After that, undo and redo no longer fix it, since Illustrator treats the broken state as the latest version.

At that point, I’m stuck manually repositioning objects, which can be tedious or sometimes impossible. It happens about 7-8 times a month, so not very frequent, but it can bring steady progress to a screeching halt and be very frustrating.

Anyone else experience this issue?

Hello @BenjiDiAnna,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Could you share more details, such as the version of the OS/Illustrator installed, whether this happens with all files, and a brief screen recording of the problem, so we can better assist you?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Anubhav,

Illustrator 30.3
macOS Tahoe 26.2

Thanks for reaching out. This issue started about 12 months ago in Illustrator 29.4 and has continued since. I don’t have a screen recording and can’t reliably capture one, since it happens randomly and not often enough to reproduce on demand.

Here’s what I can describe:

A Cmd+Z undo performs only a partial history rollback. Some objects within a selection return to their previous state, while others do not. For example, after a simple move with the Selection Tool, only part of the selection moves back. I’ve also seen appearance settings fail to revert correctly and glitch.

Redo does not resolve the issue. Once it occurs, Illustrator seems to corrupt the history states, and there’s no correct state to return to.
