Unembedding Raster Images in Illustrator Turns them into Black Boxes

I'm working with a PDF file from a client, and I'm trying to extract the images from it.

First I tried using Photoshop, but that didn't work.

Then I tried Illustrator, and it mostly works. I open each page and unembed each image, but when unembedding certain images, they turn into a solid black box. Does anyone know what might be causing this or how to fix it?

What happens if you open in Acrobat and do a SaveAs? Even SaveAs eps...

It's liable to screw up your fonts and probably transparency but if you are just after the images that shouldn't matter - unless it breaks your image into smaller parts...

What are the certain images? How are they shown in the Links panel and what is their name in the Layers panel?

In the Links panel they appear as <Clip Group> -> <Image>, and in the layers panel, their name is <Image>, same as the pictures that unembed successfully.

Do you which application created the pdf? Illustrator cannot always handle everything in a pdf when it was not saved from Illustrator with Illustrator editing capabilities checked.
