Then when i went to use the erase tool it started then stopped and i wasnt able to grab it again! also other tools were unresponsive. Im on a 2009 macbook pro  using El Capitan os 10.11.6 my browser is firefox. any ideas? ive heard that i need a mouse or a wacom tablet but im seeing what i can do with the built-in tracpad. any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Hi Pierre,

You don't need to have an external device like a track-pad or wacom to work with Illustrator. They are complimentary and enhances the work, but you should be able to work with the inbuilt track-pad.

If the tools are non responsive at times, I would suggest you to reset the Illustrator preferences and then check. See: How to set preferences in Illustrator

Also check if you have any conflicting app installed like an anti-virus. If yes, disable it for a moment and test Illustrator.
