Question

Updates are corrupting my preferences.

Is this a common thing?  Every so often, whenever a new update gets installed, my AI prefs file ends up getting corrupted.

It's very common for Illustrator that you have to reset the prefs when updating.

Well, in this case it's managed to remove my preference to not save documents to the cloud and now I can't fix it. I clicked to tell it to save to my computer and never ask again but it's defaulting to the cloud anyway.

Isn't there a way to retain my old pref file with updates?  That seems quite ridiculous that everything has to be reset over and over again.

Actually, keeping a preference file from a previous version is not a good idea. Old preference files are compatible with the versions of Illustrator within which they were created. There is no way to guarantee that those preferences will interact with the new version in the way they were originally intended. The best bet when updating is to make sure that the option to import previous preferences and settings is unchecked. More often that not keeping old preferences is asking for headaches.
