"Use Artboards" option is not functioning properly

Hello,

I'm having an irksome issue in Illustrator.

I'm using a Macbook Pro (2019) running Ventura 13.2.1

Illustrator 2023 Version 27.6.1

By the way, I just updated to 27.6.1. This was happening before I updated too.

I'm trying to export a project of mine as a PDF as well as a JPEG. On this project, I have my background bleeding over 0.25. My project looks perfect in "trim view", but when I go to export, the resulting file is not cropped. Obviously I want the bleed for when I export this project as a printPDF, but for now I just want to export it without the bleed. I do have the "Use Artboards" box checked, but it is doing nothing. I had an Illustrator expert remote access my computer, but he couldn't solve the issue. Can anyone shed any light on what could be happening and what the best way to fix this? I can manually trim this and export to work for now, but I would love for the "Use Artboards" feature to function how it's supposed to function. Thank you!

You could create a custom Adobe PDF Preset with Use Document Bleed Settings checked and use that one in Export for Screens. No need to turn on the Include Bleed there, because it is already turned on in the PDF preset.

When posting please let us know what exact clickstream/command you are using to export. Also a screenshot of your settings. Please provide exactly what you did, so we can actually help you.

If you are checking use artboards this should work. That you did not provide such needed and basic information as I requested, highly suggests user error such as

This solution does honor the artboard dimensions, but poses the same issue as the other suggested solution on this thread which was to export as a JPEG using "Save for web" (which also honors artboard dimensions). It reduces the file quality and I need a PDF not a JPEG.

Either way, none of the answers in this thread address the main issue which is why "use artboards" being checked would not be honored. I am running Ai 28.5 on a macbook pro running Sonoma 14.3 and I have this issue when using Save a Copy>[choose PDF], as well as when I use Export>Export As>[choose PNG]. Other documents opened in the same program, when the "use artboards" checkbox is selected honor the setting and don't export anything outside of artboard bounds. I tried releasing all clipping masks and recreating them, to no avail. Getting ready to pull my hair out next! haha. Any thoughts appreciated.

I am not sure what you mean by "Other documents opened in the same program, when the "use artboards" checkbox is selected honor the setting and don't export anything outside of artboard bounds" How do you check that? If you save a PDF with Illustrator Editing capabilities checked, it will export everything to let Illustrator edit the file. If you don't want other artboards or anything that does not touch your artboard in the PDF, make a preset that has Illustrator Editing Capabilities unchecked.

You could use "Save for web" for exporting the JPEG

I actually tried this, but it was trying to significantly cut down the resoultion of my image. After saving it with this method, the picture was very pixelated. The project I'm working on is an 8.5x14 restaurant menu at 300ppi and needs to be very crisp for my client to inspect. However, the workaround I used was copying everything into InDesign and exporting from there. It's not an issue because that's where I'll be exporting the final print PDF anyway.
