I am brand new to Illustrator. I just received news that, as a longtime MS Publisher user, Microsoft is dropping Publisher and is not going to even allow contunued use without support.

I am trying to switch to Illustrator. I have downloarded the Avery Template for the label I want to use.

But I can find no way to edit and add text, artwork or anything to the label.

Please help!

THANK YOU!!!

I was able to find the Layers Menu and sure enough, they were locked. Once unlocked, I was able to being to edit and design my labels now.

Thank You Again for the help, it is greatly appreciated.

You need to unlock the layer you're working on first, by clicking on the lock.
or select the empty layer.
See Window > Layers

Wow. I didn't know Microsoft was slating Publisher for End of Life. Do you have a perpetual license version of Publisher (as a standalone app or bundled in an MS Office product) or is it bundled in a subscription product like Office 365?

If you have a perpetual license version of Publisher it will continue to work after the October 2026 EOL date; the app just won't receive any further updates. It looks like Publisher will be removed from Office 365 in October. Any .PUB files would need to be converted to other formats, such as PDF, in order to be opened. Some graphics applications can import .PUB files (LibreOffice Draw, Scribus, CorelDRAW) but results will probably be pretty hit or miss. The same goes for online file conversion tools like MarkzPortal. Unfortunately Adobe Illustrator doesn't have a filter to import/place .PUB files.

You should be able to download the template with Illustrator compatibility.

One example is here https://www.avery.com/templates/5160

Avery gives a choice of various formats to download the template and Illustrator is one of them.

I did download the Avery template. But when I select a tool, it shows a circle with a line through it and will not allow me to edit the label stock.
