Originally a CS2 user, only need to use the program a couple times a month. Eventually upgraded to CS5 and have been using it since. Works fine but only need to use it once in awhile.  It was working fine on Friday but now on Monday if I try to print it will only print the first layer and errors out something about there is not enough memory blah, blah, blah. Like I said, was working fine Friday. So I tried to save as a pdf thinking I could print that way...won't save, an unknown error has occurred. Tried to save file as a different file name, no go. Tried to export, no go.

You could try thesteps in here:

How to fix damaged Illustrator files

    and in here:

Enable content recovery mode | Illustrator CS2-CS5

No 1, install the latest Illustrator. Well, no more than I use the program, CC is just not in the cards.  CS2 and CS5 is all I have.

No 2, Move to hard drive.  It is already there.

No 3, Create new, place...did that, no difference. It won't let me save the new one either, "An unknown error has occurred"

No 4 Copy damaged artwork. Worked!  Perfect! Thanks.

What kind of computer and what kind of operating system are you using.

That will help one of us figure out something.  And that is the first thing they will need to know.

Also did you make any kind of updates over the weekend?

Just a plain old Dell computer. Nothing has changed in it. I deleted the CS5 settings file and it made a new one when it started the next time, same result. But what I did discover is that it has something to do with a particular drawing. If I load anything else into the program it all works normally, but once I load that one, and even if I close it, the program itself continues to be screwed up until I exit the program and restart. So this one .ai file I was working on Friday seems to be the culprit.

I tried opening it and copying and pasting a small part of it into a new drawing and then it would not save or print the new drawing either. So the culprit .ai does something to illustrator itself that corrupts it until you restart the program.
