Way to embed images such that they persist after removed link?

I have been having many issues with linked image files being lost, which of course completely messes up my illustrator document. Is there a way to embed an image in an Illustrator file, such that after its link disappears, it remains?

Yes, during placing uncheck the Link checkbox in the Options, or when already linked choose Embed from the Control panel, the Properties panel or the Links panel.

Or check Include Linked Files when saving.
